Fluff for February

Need some totally useless information about dates in February? You've come to the right place!
We all know that today is Groundhog's Day

and the 14th is Valentine's day
but are there other dates to celebrate this month? Sure there are!
Yesterday, the first was National Freedom Day. This is not to be confused with Burn Your Bra Day, the date of that escapes me at the moment.

This Saturday, the 6th is Wear Red Day which ties in with February being American Heart Health Month.
The 7th is Ballet Day and the 8th is Laugh and Get Rich Day.
The 10th is Chinese New Year. I have no idea what this graphic says, I only hope it is good wishes for all of us.

The 12th is the date of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, the 22nd was George Washington's, but for some reason years ago it was decided to celebrate them both under the name President's Day on the the 15th.
The 16th is Fat Tuesday this year, also known as Mardi Gras. The 17th is a more somber day, Ash Wednesday and signals the beginning of Lent.
Don't give up desserts for Lent though, because the 19th is Chocolate Mint Day and the 20th is National Cherry Pie Day. February is also National Cherry Month.
The 20th is also Hoodie Hoo Day in the northern hemisphere. Come back on the 20th and I will explain this very special, important day.

The 21st is Single Tasking Day and later in the week, the 26th is For Pete's Sake Day
And last but not least, the 28th is National Tooth Fairy Day
Besides  being dedicated to cherries and heart health, February is also Black History Month
and possibly most apropos to some of us, February is also Spunky Old Broads Month. Without a composite photo of many bloggers, I'll use this photo of the Golden Girls to represent us SOBs.
Do you know the flower and gemstone associated with February? The flower is the Iris, shown here as painted by Van Gogh

and the gemstone is the amethyst. The amethyst is most easily recognizable in the first photo, but do you recognize it uncut and unpolished?

And lastly, did you know Amethysts aren't always purple?

I love gemstones. When I have all my unfinished projects here done, or in my next reincarnation, I plan to study gemology. If you are thinking that there is time for that to happen in this lifetime, you don't know me as well as you think you do.Photobucket

Happy February for any and every reason!

P.S. If you got notice of a second new post that isn't showing here, it is because I meant to hit post options and schedule it for a later day, not hit Publish Post. You'd think I'd learn! Can I blame this on it being Groundhog's Day?

Great post, Knitty. I had no idea there were so many holidays in February, including my birthday on the 3rd (National Blonde Day). Interesting to find out my birthstone isn't just purple. I went 50 years not knowing this. Thanks for the update!
