Hooray! It is February first! Time to say Rabbit! Rabbit! for good luck.
January was a very trying month but things are looking up. I do appreciate each and every day, but I can't lie....I am glad that we are inching closer to spring and better yet, Summer!
Since I am not currently feeling puny, you know that punny has probably returned. You've been forewarned.
Once in a land far, far away there lived a group of people called Trids. The
Trids were happy except for the huge ogre that lived on the mountain. The ogre
would periodically terrorize the Trids.
The Trids tired of the ogre and
sought to reason with him. They thought one of their religious leaders would be
a good intermediary. So a group of Trids and their minister went up the mountain
and before they could even say one word the ogre kicked them down the mountain.
Not being dismayed the Trids thought that maybe the ogre was Catholic, so they
sent another delegation, this time led by the local priest. But alas, as they
approached the ogre he once again kicked them all down the mountain.
The
Trids were upset until they thought that perhaps the ogre was Jewish.
Unfortunately, no Trids were Jewish, so they wrote to the people of another land
and asked them to send a Rabbi to help them with the ogre. The Rabbi arrived and
led a delegation of Trids up the mountain. The ogre saw them coming and kicked
all of them, except for the Rabbi, down the mountain. The Rabbi, having been
told of the previous expeditions, wondered why he alone had not been kicked down
the mountain, so he asked the ogre. The ogre laughed and replied:
"Silly
Rabbi, kicks are for Trids!"

August 1st: Rabbit! Rabbit!
It is August 1st!
Time to say Rabbit! Rabbit! again in hopes of a lucky month for all of us.
Do you know what else August 1st brings to us? No? Well, you are lucky that I'm here to fill you in!
August 1st (in alphabetical order) is:
The month of August is:
The first week of August is National Simplify your Life Week
Today I am going to simplify my life by donating a minority to my Celtic girlfriends, delivering raspberry cream pie to my friends who sing in rounds (- think "row, row, row your boat"...I had to look up Rounds Resounding Day), and use forceful air to remove spiders from the wide webs that reappear overnight on my front porch. I think that covers everything for the first except for respecting parents which I do every day.
Now go ahead and admit you're happy, that this was fun, that I'm a peach and you love me. That will knock off four monthly observances for you!

July 1st: Happy Canada Day! and Rabbit! Rabbit!
Happy Canada Day to my northern friends and neighbors!
It has been a wonderfully busy weekend in Knitty-ville. I think we had around 50 people here Friday night to watch my city's fireworks from our driveway. Being that we were outside and some friends are also friends of neighbors and therefore wandered in and out, I have no idea what number of people were actually here.
Yesterday I frosted a cake for my great-niece's birthday party and also a dozen cupcakes. Her request for a cake that tasted like cookie dough. I wrote about that here. I made a yellow cake and frosted it with the frosting portion of this recipe. I used a candy mold to form letters to spell out Happy Birthday Allison to decorate the top of the cake along with a few mini chocolate chips.
Before the luau themed birthday party, we had a neighbor's wedding to attend. Since I haven't asked permission to share their photos, I've lopped the heads of the bride and her daughters. Trust me, they were all gorgeous. I'm including this picture because I wanted to talk about the bride's dress.
Taken by cell phone without a flash as they were moving doesn't do the fabric justice, but it was stunning and perfect for this woman's second wedding. Here is another view taken at her backyard reception. It was hot yesterday, 95 degrees or more, so the groom had ditched his tux before dancing.
My neighbor doesn't like to shop. One of her sisters found this dress for her at Penney's online. It looks much better on my neighbor than in this photo at Penney's. She looked beautiful, and at a bargain price!
I've had such a nice chatting with people I don't see every day, and one little guy that I am blessed to see often. It wouldn't be a photo heavy post from me if I didn't include one shot of the grandson. Here he is concentrating, hence the position of his tongue.
Here he is laughing at the fact that his little cousin, who couldn't see over the top of the pool from where he stood on the grass, managed to shoot water from the hose directly into daddy's face.
Ahhhhh....summer!
Rabbit! Rabbit! for good luck this month to everyone! I hope you're enjoying family and friends as much as I am.

The chocolate cupcakes were frosted with a recipe that the Pioneer Woman claims is the best she's ever tasted. The frosting isn't overly sweet and is much like what Kroger uses in their bakeries. That recipe is here. My husband was very pleased with that frosting. Next I will have to experiment with adding cocoa to it, and will see if it holds up to simple decorating tips, such as shell and rosette borders. November 1st already...Rabbit, Rabbit!
How the heck did it get to be November 1st already?
Rabbit, Rabbit....for good luck. If you aren't familiar with this superstition, I talk about it here.
How are you spending the first day of the month? I'll be packing away ghosts and pumpkins and bringing out turkeys and pilgrims. A few autumn decorations are holiday neutral and will stay in place until it is time to decorate for the C-word. I can't bring myself to say that holiday out loud yet, you know which one...the one that takes place in December.
Since I'm not ready to talk about future holidays yet, let's review review Halloween. Were there many trick or treaters in your neighborhood? Were they cute or scary? Did you have a good time?

I did, mainly because I felt so safe. When your grandson is Superman, how can you not feel safe?
Look at that steely gaze and those abs!
Do you hear a damsel in distress?
Oh, it's just silly ole grandma!
Halloween is such an emotional holiday...
Upper left: Oh please, let there be some candy left!
Lower left: All right! 8 PM, done and there is still candy in the bowl!
Right: Bill saved all the Snickers for himself and gave out what I like!!!

What I've learned from the news
I seem to rant about the news frequently, yet still I tune in. I claim it is to hear the weather forecast but am I secretly addicted? Years ago on a forum that no longer exists within the HGTV message boards, there was a woman who saw conspiracies in everything. Every. Little. Thing. I have no doubt that she would have deduced that a micro chip was implanted on my last dental examination what forced me to tune in and receive daily indoctrinations.
I think I just like to laugh at the absurdity of many things until it becomes too much, too depressing and necessary to stay away from it for a while. Since the only thing depressing in my world today is the weather (gray, wet and way too cold for October 1st!), today's news is worthy of a few rolling eyeballs and head shakes. Did you know that it isn't ok to kill a terrorist if they were born in America? The pacifist in me wishes no one ever had to use a weapon period, but the realist in me doesn't care where they were born.
I am shocked! Shocked, I tell you [can you hear the sarcasm coming from my keyboard?] that Martha Stewart won't be nominated for Mother of the Year by her daughter. Personally, I like many of the ideas, crafts and products from Martha, the corporation. My gut feeling has always been that she isn't a warm person that I would enjoy knowing, but neither Martha or I have lost sleep over this. Did her daughter really need to write an expose on her mom? Especially while mom is alive? Do I think this was done for the money? No, no and a big fat yes!
Speaking of fat, did you know that NJ governor Chris Christie is too fat to be president? Before I say another word, I want to announce that I have no political affiliations, don't know if Christie has been good, bad or indifferent for his home state and I am an overweight American. Will Americans at large (is it ok to use that phrase or does that promote obesity?) ever look beneath the surface and determine a person's value for a position based on merit and experience rather than appearances? Hmmm, maybe not considering former playmate Holly Madison just insured her breasts for one million dollars. She certainly is within her rights to do this, but when you pay a hundred dollars to see her show in Vegas, you're paying to see her "biggest money makers" (her words) and the insurance premium too. Who is the biggest boob? Whatever size bra Holly Madison now wears, she isn't likely to find it on the rack (ooh! rack is another terms for boobs! I may have to give this post an R rating!) at Target where our First Lady recently shopped. Can you imagine having your shopping trips scrutinized? Or worse, not being able to come and go as you please? I understand the need for security but I like to shop at Target. That is why I won't agree to my husband running for president next year or any time in the near future. There's also the fat factor as I'm sure I am too fat to be First Lady, my silly belief that a person's value should be measured by their character rather than what trendy label they wear or who did their cosmetic work, my children's upbringing possibly being scrutinized (years of peanut butter and jelly on white bread without carrot sticks, arugula or soy milk!) and lastly, that I will talk to anyone peacefully but if you want to blow up people in some misguided notion that this is what any Supreme Being (whatever you choose to call the entity I call God) wants, I will pray for those who must stop you in order to save the lives of many.
On happier notes, there are only 262 days until summer returns and today is October 1st, time to once again say Rabbit! Rabbit! for good luck!
I'm off now to have my body scanned for the type of chips mentioned in my first paragraph. Thank goodness there is a setting that ignores chocolate chips and potato chips....I could be in big trouble otherwise!

Rabbit! Rabbit!
'Tis August 1st and I don't know anyone who couldn't use more good luck so don't forget to say Rabbit Rabbit today.
Metro Detroit normally has, on average, 13 days of 90 degrees or higher temps per year. We had 20 of them in July alone. I know this doesn't compare to other states who have had more hot days coupled with drought and danger of wildfires. Wherever you live, when you have prolonged unusual weather, it affects your normal routine. I hate to admit this, but the older you are, the more it seems to affect you.
Hubby and I were at the cottage this weekend. It is always cooler on the water, right? Normally I believe this, but if this is true, I hope the paint hasn't melted off our siding at home while we've been in a 'cooler' locale. Don't think I'm serious about the heat? Just look at what happened to my favorite vendor. His ice cream got so soft in the heat, kids at the park couldn't eat it fast enough before it became a huge mess. Emphasis on huge.
By the time he got to my street, his whole operation succumbed to the sweltering weather.
What sad, sad photos. I should have been there with a spoon!
Portions of the afternoons were too hot to be out on the deck while the sun was in full force. Mind you, I am NOT complaining about sunshine as I love sunny weather. I simply went indoors and pretended to be cool with two box fans and an overhead running. Have I told you that I hate the noise of fans? I do. Seriously. After 48 hours of them running nonstop, I think I've ground my teeth down to nubbins.
So what did I accomplish this warm weekend? I cooked dinner twice. I knitted until I could see the pattern develop and then ripped it out because I didn't like how it looked. I found a pattern hopefully better suited for yarn that I had to have, but couldn't start it because I didn't have the right size needles with me. I finished a paperback that my sister-in-law loaned me and am almost done with a second one. I took divadom (the art of being a diva) to a new height as I sat with my feet up, knitting and reading material nearby, while learning to play Words with Friends on my iPhone.
Wherever you are today, may your diva-ness be cool and devine. Remember my Rabbit! Rabbit! advice ( explained here ) and for heaven's sake, if an ice cream starts to melt on your street, get out a spoon for each of us and call me!

Tomorrow I will post the alphabet.
It is so easy to amuse old people!
Once in a while I get a comment from someone who does not allow me to track back to their blog or reply to them in email. When someone leaves a flattering comment or asks a question, it is frustrating not be able to thank them or answer them. I guess they forget that their settings are prohibiting feedback.
Here's to a lucky month, laughter in our lives and spam-free blogging!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE! .....

And now a serious comment...
I have changed settings on comments here so that any attempted comment to a post older than 7 days will be moderated. I've been getting comments on posts that are over a year old. All are from Anonymous and while not offensive, they are inane spam. I wish there was a way to prevent anonymous comments but I don't think there is. I don't want to go to verification at this time, and since the comments aren't happening often or to recent posts, I am not ready to go to moderation full time yet. Once in a while I get a comment from someone who does not allow me to track back to their blog or reply to them in email. March 1st Rabbit! Rabbit!
On the first of the month, the first words you say should be Rabbit! Rabbit! (or some believe it should be White Rabbit! White Rabbit!) to bring you luck for the month. I am wondering what these men said to get such huge bunnies. These photos are not photoshopped, they are from Snopes.com.
First we have Bodmin, a Flemish giant who weighs 18 pounds, the size of an average 10 month old baby.
Next up is Herman, a German giant weighing in at 22 pounds and a little over 3 feet tall on his hind legs. His breeder/owner says that while he does eat a little more than his other German giants (12 - 15 pounders), he isn't on any special feed and his favorite food is lettuce.

(See....I knew salad could make you fat!)
And now for the current record breaker according to Snopes, meet Humphrey, a French lop-earred bunny, 42" long and 25 pounds!
Owner Colin Dunigan, from Cumbernauld, Lanarkshire, said: "When I first got him I could hold him in the palms of both my hands. Every day he just kept getting bigger and bigger. I thought he would stop, but he hasn't so far."
In a single day he will eat three whole carrots, half a broccoli, a couple of asparagus tips, some wholemeal bread and a handful of biscuits.
Humphrey has the run of his owner's four-bedroom detached house after outgrowing his 6ft cage, and now enjoys lying next to the fire - and watching television. Mr Dunigan revealed he is a particular fan of the TV show Albert Square. He said: "It doesn't matter where he is in the house, when he hears the theme of EastEnders he runs to get to the television. If I try to leave the house without leaving the telly or the radio on he will stop me before I go."
I think Elmer Fudd was right...
"Be vewy, vewy afwaid..."
Happy March 1st everyone!

Rabbit! Rabbit!
Is anyone else familiar with the superstition of saying Rabbit! Rabbit! on the first day of the month?
Wikipedia explains the superstition and its variations. I don't say Rabbit! Rabbit! because I seriously think it will bring me good luck. I do it for fun. Former neighbors of my sister-in-law introduced us to this idea.
With all that needs to be accomplished this month, a little extra luck would surely be appreciated so maybe I am just a wee bit superstitious and hopeful.
One thing for certain, if I was a snowperson and saw a rabbit with a hair dryer (or would that be a hare dryer?), I would be polite and gracious. I value my flakes.
